    This course is for delegates who are responsible for planning, supervising and managing the use of Mobile Elevating Work Platforms (MEWPs) in the workplace. It outlines what managers need to know about using MEWPs on site in order to mitigate all possible risks.

    About IPAF 

    Q1. My site has told me I need IPAF Training. What does this mean? 
    IPAF stands for the International Powered Access Federation. It sets training standards, provides accredited courses and aims to help improve health, safety and skills across sectors such as construction or maintenance that use powered access equipment. If your site or employer requires IPAF training, it means you'll be operating mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and need the correct IPAF qualification to use this equipment safely and legally.

    Q2. Is this course accredited?
    Yes, the IPAF MEWPs for managers course is fully accredited by IPAF and delivered by HSS Training, an approved IPAF training provider.

    About the Course 

    Q3. What does the MEWPs for Managers course cover?
    The course covers legal duties, risk assessment, planning and supervising MEWP use, understanding hazards and managing operator compliance and site safety.

    Q4. What do the different IPAF categories mean?
    Each machine type is given an IPAF category based on whether it’s static or mobile and how it moves. 
    • The 3A category covers mobile vertical lifts (scissor lifts), which move straight up and down. 
    • The 3B category covers mobile boom lifts (cherry pickers), which can extend both up and out for greater reach. 
    • The 1B category covers static boom lift, which have a fixed base and extend up and out. 
    Understanding the categories helps managers assign the right equipment and ensure safe use on site.

    The IPAF MEWPs for Managers course is one day, combining classroom theory and practical discussion-based exercises.

    Q6. Who is this course for? 
    The course is aimed at project managers, foreman and supervisors in industries such as construction, facilities management, retail, airports, and arboriculture who oversee powered access equipment including scissor lifts, boom lifts and other aerial work platforms.

    Q7. Are there any entry requirements?
    Delegates must be at least 16 years old, in good physical health and fitness with no serious issues related to vision, hearing, heart conditions or a severe fear of heights/vertigo. Delegates must also have a good understanding of spoken and written English. For additional support, please see question 13.

    How the Training Works 

    Q8. What should I bring on the day? 
    Although there is no practical element to this course, some of our training centres are operational sites, so the following PPE is required to maintain safety on site and access your training room: Safety boots, hard hat, hi-vis vest or jacket, eye protection, protective gloves, long sleeve top, trousers - shorts are not permitted.
    You'll also need valid photo ID (passport, driving license, CSCS card).  If you're unsure whether your training venue requires PPE or you need help with sourcing items, please contact our team on 0345 605 0006 or email training@hss.com.

    Q9. Will there be practical MEWP operation? 
    No, this course focuses on management, planning and supervision. Practical operation is not included but site safety scenarios will be discussed.

    Q10. Is there parking available at the training centre? 
    Most of our training venues offer free on-site parking, although spaces may be limited. You’ll receive full parking details, including What3Words navigation, in your joining instructions once your booking is confirmed.     Assessments & Certification 

    Q11. How is the course assessed? 
    Assessment is via a short theory test and participation in practical discussions on planning, supervision, and risk management of MEWPs.

    Q12. What certification will I receive? 
    Successful delegates will receive a digital IPAF certificate via the ePAL app, confirming your managerial compliance. You can also upgrade to purchase a phyiscal printed IPAF certificate. The MEWPs for Managers qualification is only eligible for a certificate only. If you already hold a valid PAL card for other qualifications, then you may have MM category added to your card.
